Frequently Asked Questions About The Digitek Recall
What is Digitek?
Digitek is the brand name for digoxin
tablets. It is prescribed for oral use to treat heart failure and abnormal
heart rhythms.
Who makes Digitek?
Digitek is a registered trademark of Actavis
Totowa, LLC (formerly Amide Pharmaceutical, Inc.), a United States manufacturing
division of the international generic pharmaceutical company Actavis Group. The
drug is distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., under a “Bertek” label and by
UDL Laboratories, Inc., under a “UDL” label.
Where is Digitek manufactured?
Digitek is manufactured in the United
States by Actavis in Little Falls, New Jersey.
When was it recalled?
Actavis announced the Class I recall on April 25,
2008. This was followed by an FDA MedWatch Safety Alert on April 28, 2008.
Why is it being recalled?
Digitek is being recalled due to the possibility
that tablets with double the appropriate thickness were released, exposing
patients to twice the approved level of the active ingredient, digitalis.
Double strength tablets pose several serious risks, the most severe being
digitalis toxicity that can cause a multitude of health problems, including
death.
